Line Upon Line. Precept Upon Precept
The Prophet Isaiah declared to us in (Isaiah 28:10) For precept(commandment) must be upon precept(commandment) , precept(commandment) upon precept(commandment); line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.
I was reading on an Apostolic forum where a discussion is ongoing concerning Elijah and Enoch and whether or not they died and are in heaven or some kind of paradise awaiting to be resurrected. Several scriptures were quoted out of context and this is the very reason why so many false doctrines are being preached in pulpits all across this country (U.S.A) and around the world. So many people will pick a verse here and choose of verse there and use them to justify their doctrine. Isaiah said precept must be upon precept and line upon line and one cannot come to a proper understanding of God's Word by reading a verse then skip 6 and read that verse and then jump to another book and read this verse. I understand there is several different types of preaching and teaching and when one is discussing a topic several books of scripture may be used to build the foundation for what is being preached. Yet so many today take one verse of scripture and build a whole belief on one verse of scripture.
In the Apostolic church Acts 2:38 is a popular verse preached on in many services. Although I believe this scripture reveals to us the procedure of obedience that is to be followed when one believes that Jesus lived, was crucified, buried resurrected the third day (after being dead for 72 hours) and that He is coming again but to those who have obeyed this procedure their needs to be meat in God's house that produces good works for God's Kingdom. Jesus told the disciples when they went away to get some food and Jesus met the woman at the well of Jacob in Samaria in the city of sychar. They brought food to Jesus and said Master eat. Jesus said I have meat to eat that you know not of (John 4:32). They wandered if any had brought him meat to eat and Jesus said My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me and to finish his work (John 4: 34). While Acts 2:38 needs to be preached we as preachers so often overlook the fact that there are starving hungry people who desire to know God's Word because in His Word we not only find strength but His Will.
For example: One quoted the scripture where the Apostle stated to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. While misquoting this verse so many have made a doctrine through their wrong interpretation or rather their misinterpretation of this scripture taken out of context. In order to understand this verse one must read the whole chapter of (2 Corinthians 5). I am going to post the whole chapter all 21 verses and comment on the verses in context so you will see that Paul in no way shape or form believed he was going to be present with the Lord when he died.
(2 Corinthians 5: 1-21).
1For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7(For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 11Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. 12For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart. 13For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. 14For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. 16Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 17Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
First Paul declares that we have a house in the heavens not made or fashioned by hands, eternal in the heavens but this house the building of God is in heaven and not living eternally inside of me and you. Paul said in this we groan desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is in heaven if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. Paul is saying we are not wishing to be unclothed or his life or his person his body(soul) to be stripped away but to be clothed upon or to put on life or immortality.
Paul also makes us aware that our walk is by faith and not by sight. Here is the verse (v 8 ) that is misinterpreted and a false teaching based about the misquote of this verse is derived from. (2 Corinthians 5:8 ) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. To say Paul was declaring a doctrine that when we die we go to be present with the Lord is unscriptural and is a false teaching based on a misquote of this verse. Paul was saying he was willing to be absent from the body present with the Lord not that he would be with the Lord at death but that he would rather be present with the Lord.
Paul goes on to say that that we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ that everyone may receive the things doen in his body according to as he has done good or bad. This same Paul wrote that in (1 Corinthians 15: 51-52) 51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. Notice Paul tells us this change from mortal to immortality will happen when? At the last trump which is the 7th vial at the opening of the 7th seal found in ( Revelation 10:6-8 ) when the angel stands with one foot on the land and one on the sea and declares time to be no more. During this time the 7 thunders utter their voices and the mystery of God will be finished.
Paul declared in (2 Timothy 4:7-8 ) 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. When will he receive this crown of righteousness? At the Lord's appearing.
John the beloved declared in ( 1John 3:1-2) 1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. When he shall appear we shall see him and we will be like him in that this mortal will put on immortality and death will give way to life everlasting.
So when preachers and church leaders take a verse of scripture and misquote it and preach a doctrine built upon a false premise then people are misinformed and die with false hopes and beliefs seeking life after death that is so very far from the truth. Preachers are still preaching the lie the devil told eve. You shall not surely die ( Genesis 3: 4). This lie was started by the devil after God told Adam the punishment for eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil would result in death (Genesis 2:17) 17But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
(Romans 6:23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
If you want to know the truth about a verse of scripture that has been misquoted or preached out of context then you must read the whole chapter beloved. May God bless you in your walk with the Lord Jesus and your desire to know and learn your Heavenly father the Lord Jesus Christ's Word.
In Jesus Name,
