Warren And Shaun Know How To Create Powerful Chemistry - Autumn Internationals 2010
ENGLAND rugby icon Lawrence Dallaglio last night insisted Warren Gatland will "press the right buttons" to revive Wales from their 2009 fallow period – but he believes home advantage will count at Twickenham today.
The man who played in every game of his country's victorious 2003 World Cup campaign offered a fascinating insight into how Gatland and Shaun Edwards – who coached him at Wasps for three years – will get into the minds of Ryan Jones and his team in the build-up to the big Six Nations opener.
But Dallaglio, fiercely patriotic and passionate about the Red Rose cause, reckons it won't be enough for Wales to engineer a second successive win at Headquarters.
And he reckons England will still be smarting from their collapse in 2008, a capitulation that ended 20 years of misery for Wales in south west London.
"If you could give every coach the choice, he would opt to play the first game of the championship at home," said Dallaglio.
Dallaglio, like his old team mate and now England boss Martin Johnson, belonged to an era when England lorded it over Wales to the extent where victory was practically taken for granted.
There was of course the blip of Wembley 1999, when Dallaglio's decision not to ask Jonny Wilkinson to go for the posts in the dying moments allowed Wales to snatch an astonishing victory through Scott Gibbs' late score.
But the ex-Lions back row powerhouse is acutely aware that Wales are now going for their fourth Six Nations triumph against the old enemy on the trot.
And Dallaglio stressed he now has huge respect for the threat the new Wales pose.
The first player he picks out is loosehead prop Gethin Jenkins, who will be so missed by Gatland's men today after being ruled out late on with a calf strain.
Dallaglio feels though that the Blues prop will make his presence felt as soon as he returns.
He continued: "The one thing that strikes me is the sheer talent that Wales have sprinkled throughout their side.
"The key man for me is Gethin Jenkins who I think has become one of the most influential figures in the international game in the last two or three years.
"He was magnificent for the Lions in South Africa and everything about what he does indicates he is comfortable and confident at this level.
The form of the captain though, has also caught Dallaglio's eye, as has the impact of young fly-half Dan Biggar, who the Englishman believes could make his presence felt if not this weekend, then later in the championship.
"To me, Ryan Jones looks fresh after what was a bit of a disappointing season for him personally last year," he added.
"He looks lean and mean and back to the kind of form he showed when he first came through two or three years ago.
"Ryan is still a class act and he is another one who is going to have a big effect on events at Twickenham.
"But I also want to give a mention to the youngster, Dan Biggar. I don't know how much time he will get on the field in the next six weeks or so, but he has real potential."
The importance of winning the first game of the tournament is a theme that has been trumpeted by any number of pundits these last few weeks.
Dallaglio concedes England are under as much pressure as any team to do that, but he stressed it is also critical for Wales. And he gave an insight into the contrasting emotions that the opening weekend produces in dressing rooms.
"If you win, then the overriding feeling among players of either side will be that anything is possible. And I really feel that if England can beat Wales this time, then they could go on to have their most successful championship for many a year.
"But Wales have shown that they now know how to win at Twickenham, and if they do, they have three home games to look forward to and they will probably then fancy another crack at a Grand Slam.
