Lacquer or Silver trumpet? Can't decide?
I'm looking into the Yamaha Bobby Shew 8310z and I can't decide between the lacquer and the silver model. What are some things I should consider when making this decision? Does it affect the sound or playability?
I like to be able to do both classical and jazz equally well - in jazz I usually play lead trumpet.
That's crap, Hogan, plenty of pros use laquer (or unlaquered raw brass). Silver lasts longer, is more durable and holds its color (laquer discolors after many years). After many years of playing, laquer will wear and the spots that wear off will tarnish.
Any diffierance in tone is VERY minimal a best.
Decide on cosmetics only, if you like the way silver looks and don't mind the extra expense, go for it. Anyone who diss's laquer either doesn't know what they're talking about or is trying to make up for some sort of personal inadequacy.
